How to run a Rainbow Six Siege tournament on Discord
Running an R6 tournament in your Discord server used to mean a spreadsheet, a bracket site, and a lot of pinging people. This guide walks through the whole thing, from sign-ups to crowning a winner, using Ipo's Tournament Bot. It's free to start and works for 1v1 up to 5v5.
1. What you need
- A Discord server where you have the Manage Server permission.
- A channel for sign-ups and bracket updates, for example
#tournaments. - Enough players for at least 2 teams. For a first event, 8 or 16 teams is a good size.
2. Add the bot and set it up
Add Ipo's Tournament Bot to your server, then run /setup. That's where you choose:
- An owner role, for people who can run tournaments. The server owner can always do everything.
- A verified role, given to players once they've added their Ubisoft name.
- A buy-in role, only if you run paid tournaments. Players need it to sign up, and you hand it out once they've paid.
- Your rules, shown in every match channel.
In Server Settings → Roles, drag the bot's role above the verified and buy-in roles, or it can't hand them out. The website warns you if it's in the wrong place.
3. Get players' Ubisoft names
Players run /verify (or press the button in the welcome DM) and type their Ubisoft name. It's added to their server nickname as Name [UbiName], so everyone can find each other in game, and no two players in your server can use the same name. Nobody is ever asked for a password.
4. Create the tournament
Use /tournament create in Discord, or the Create a tournament form on the website. You'll pick:
- Name and format: 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 or 5v5.
- The channel for sign-ups and bracket updates.
- How matches run: all at once at the players' own pace, or one at a time in the order you choose (Premium).
- When it starts: at a set time, or whenever you press start.
- Max teams, prize, buy-in, platform and any extra info. All optional.
- Check-in: 15, 30 or 60 minutes before the start. Strongly recommended, see below.
The bot posts a sign-up message straight away. On the free plan the tournament is also listed on our public R6 tournaments page, so new players can find your server.
5. Sign-ups and check-in
Captains press Join on the sign-up post, name their team and pick their teammates. You can rename or remove teams, and close or reopen sign-ups, from Discord or the website.
Check-in is how you avoid the classic problem of teams signing up and never showing. When it opens, sign-ups close and every captain gets pinged and a DM with a link. Teams that don't press Check in before the start are dropped before the bracket is built, so nobody sits in a match waiting for an empty team.
6. Start it: bracket and match channels
At the start time, or when you start it yourself, the bot builds the bracket. If the number of teams isn't a power of two (like 12 instead of 16), it hands out byes so the bracket still works. Every match gets its own private channel that only those two teams (and your server's admins) can see, so they can sort out lobbies and screenshots without cluttering the server.
On Premium you can also design the first round yourself, for example to seed the strongest teams apart.
7. How matches are played
- Format: the two teams vote for best-of-1 or best-of-3 in their match channel.
- Maps: on the free plan each game gets a random map from a small pool. On Premium you set your own map pool and choose whether teams vote for maps or ban down to the last one.
- Result: after each game, players vote on who won with the buttons, and post a screenshot of the scoreboard in the channel. Once enough players agree, the result is locked in and the bracket moves on by itself.
If something gets stuck, organizers can step in: /resolve forces a result, format or map, /sub swaps a player, and /dq disqualifies a team.
8. Finishing up
When the final is won, the bot announces the champions and adds the win to every player's leaderboard total. Match channels are cleaned up automatically, and the finished tournament is deleted, so keep your own note of results if you need them for prizes.
9. Tips for a smooth tournament
- Always use check-in for anything with a start time. 30 minutes before works well for most servers.
- Play best-of-1 early, best-of-3 for the final. It keeps the event to a sensible length.
- Write your rules down in
/setup(settings, lobby hosting, what counts as a no-show), so they're in every match channel. - Be careful with buy-ins and prizes. The bot never handles money, so agree clearly with players how prizes are paid, and only take buy-ins you can refund if the event is cancelled.
- Do a test run first.
/test tournament mode:Onlets one account register several teams, so you can walk through a whole bracket on your own.
10. FAQ
Can I run an R6 tournament on Discord for free?
Yes. Ipo's Tournament Bot is free for brackets, private match channels, check-in and Ubisoft name linking, with up to 2 tournaments running at once. Premium (£5/month) adds unlimited tournaments, captain drafts, your own map pool and more.
How long does a 16-team R6 tournament take?
A 16-team single-elimination bracket is 4 rounds. With best-of-1 matches most servers get through it in around 3 to 4 hours. Best-of-3 roughly doubles that, so a lot of hosts play best-of-1 until the final.
What happens if a team doesn't show up?
Turn on check-in. Teams that don't press Check in before the start are removed before the bracket is made, so nobody gets stuck waiting. If a team disappears mid-tournament, disqualify them with /dq and their opponent goes through.
Does it work for console players?
Yes. You pick PC, console or both when you create the tournament, so players know who it's for. The bot runs everything in Discord, so it doesn't matter what platform people play on.
Do players need to give their Ubisoft password?
Never. Players only type their Ubisoft name. The bot puts it in their server nickname and makes sure two people in your server can't use the same one.
Can I run it from a website instead of commands?
Yes. Log in on ipostournaments.com with Discord and you can create tournaments, open check-in, fix teams and pick matches from your browser.
